How Hybrid Cars Work: A Brief Glimpse of the Car of the Future

More Americans are weighing whether to sell our old primarily fuel burning cars and purchasing a new kind of car that could reduce your gas consumption by half. This new type of automobile is labeled as hybrid cars. Add to that the fact that hybrid vehicles produce fewer pollutants than most cars currently on the road. So, with more of us turning to hybrids, the better off we all will be.

Now that you know a little more about why so many are interested in hybrids it’s logical that you learn how they work. I will give you a short introduction. We will skip Hybrid car history in this article.

In a nutshell, what hybrids do is actually use two types of energy, gas and electricity to work. For starters, it’s important to know that the electric part of the engine is only working while the car is idling and the gasoline engine is automatically shut off. That means the hybrid is an electric car while sitting in traffic or at lights. This helps to explain why you can hardly hear a hybrid while it’s idling in a driveway or at an intersection. This is also why hybrids are so fuel efficient. At the instant the accelerator is pushed however, the gas engine powers back on. There are even hybrid vehicles that give you the option to ask it to run solely on electric power. This can be an incredibly useful thing who don’t venture too far from home with their cars. This could make it so you don’t even have to put fuel into your car for longer than you ever imagined possible.

However, in any hybrid, you have to consider putting gasoline for long travels. You can even say that the gasoline will be used for back up power in case the battery is discharged. There’s nothing more to it– just a battery for energy storage, a generator, a conventional combustion engine, a gas tank, plus a motor that’s electric. Now you know why it is called a ‘Hybrid’.

Now that you know more about hybrids, you now see how beneficial it can be if you are driving one. Owning the car will not only save a lot of money by cutting your fuel consumption, but you will also be doing your part to help preserve and protect the environment.
